Doncaster Races, March 2026
A fresh optimism would fill the Spring air in South Yorkshire as the biggest moment of the year for flat racing enthusiasts would take place, the start of the turf season at Doncaster. The traditional Lincoln meeting on Town Moor draws back the curtains of a dark and dreary winter to unveil new faces in the training ranks and early pointers to the equine stars of this year.
Siting between the two premier jumps festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree, the Lincoln meeting would be in focus on its typical late March slot on the calendar. The Brocklesby Stakes would kick off the card and would be as unpredictable as ever with twenty debutantes in the line up, followed by a pair of listed races which have produced Group One winners later in the season in recent renewals. The main contest itself would be the cavalry charge of the mile-long Lincoln Handicap, but the prelude to it would also be the Spring Mile, which would give last minute clues to a potential track bias. As the sound of starting stalls would replace the brushing of fences, this would be Christmas Day to the lovers of flat racing.
Race One: The William Hill Bill Turner Memorial Brocklesby Stakes - Class Two - 2-Y-O's Only - Five Furlongs - Runners:
Kicking off the racecard would be the historic juvenile contest, the Brocklesby Stakes. The race was first run under these conditions back in 1875 and has been a source for very precocious two-year-olds ever since. The race can often be unpredicatable with so many inexperienced horses sharing the same piece of turf, but some high class horses have won this race in recent years. Persian Force was a dominant winner of this is 2022 before going on to place in Group One company later in that season. Santry, The Last Lion and Hearts Of Fire have also been other very good winners in the last twenty years. This year's contest would also be run in tribute of Bill Turner, who was synonymous with this race. Despite training in Devon, he would always target this race each year and won it five times between 1996 and 2013. Twelve months ago, Amo Racing would win this contest for the second time in three years with Norman's Cay, whose life was tragically cut short on his next run.
The card would be led by A Bear Affair, trained by Richard Hannon who is a regular supporter of this race. The son of Kodi Bear is also the first foal of a Group Two placed mare, so he would make appeal on breeding. Malton trainer Richard Fahey recently added his son Peter to the license and the pair would have their first runner together with Arrbob. The son of established sire Ardad is a distant relative to some talented sprinters so would be bred for the job. Former top class jockey Adam Kirby has turned his hand to training and would be represented by Bill The Bull in this contest. The colt is by speedy sire Coulsty and is related to a host of smart sprinters. Big spending outfit Amo Racing Ltd won this race in 2022 and 2025 and would look for a third with a handful of good chances. The first would be Blixen Force, a son of first season sire Persian Force. Robson De Aguiar's colt would travel over from Ireland and would look to follow in the hoofprints of his sire. Another Yorkshire based trainer in the lineup would be Adrian Keatley with Boutblummintime. The colt is out of a mare bred by the late Queen Elizabeth and related to a few Pattern-class horses of recent years. Stephen Hanlon has recently taken over the Leyburn stables of Ann Duffield and he would saddle Brandenburg. The son of Ubettabeliveit has a blend of speed and stamina in his pedigree so could be worth following. One of the best bred horses in the line up would be Ralph Beckett's colt Dance A Jig. The trainer isn't usually associated with runners in this contest, but the Naval Crown colt comes from the family of the outstanding sprinter Lochsong. Welsh trainer David Evans often has plenty of interest in this race and would rely upon Dandyman Don. The colt would be looking to run well for the stable which saddled the runner up of this race in 2011. A second runner for the David Evans stable would be Downloadmylife. The son of Mohaather is related to winners over much longer trips, so this contest may not be as suitable on paper. Newmarket based trainer Lemos de Souza would send up Invincible Isaac for this contest. The colt might only be modestly bred, but he is made to be a sprinter as a son of Mayson. A second runner for the Amo Racing operation would be Ocean Club, who is also bred by Persian Force. He would travel over from the Robson De Aguiar stable in Ireland for this contest and cost a fair amount at the yearling sales. Rlasthope would line up for the Tony Coyle and Kaine Wood stable who often produce a runner to go well in this contest. The son of Rajasinghe is bred to be speedy, but has already been gelded ahead of his debut which would dampen confidence. The third and final runner for the Amo Racing and Robson de Aguiar combination would be Salt Lake. The bay colt catches the eye on pedigree as a half brother to last year's speedy juvenile Lady Iman, who won a Group Three at Goodwood during the summer. Gary and Josh Moore are usually preparing horses for the Aintree festival, but would turn their attention to this race with their newcomer Seathegulls. The son of Twilight Sun is related to three winners, albeit over longer distances, but would be an interesting runner for the predominantly jumps based yard. Dylan Cunha would win this race two years ago with Zminiature and the ever growing stable would aim to repeat the feat with Step To Glory. His sire Cotai Glory is starting to produce high class sprinters in recent seasons. There would be a poignant runner as Bill Turner's daughter Kathy saddled the colt Summersadness. The son of Territories will have plenty of supporters for a potentially topical winner. A second runner for the Adrian Keatley stable would be Thebesthasyetocome. The son of Starman would look to better his relatives on track as they haven't produced much in their respective careers to date. Middleham Park Racing are big supporters of this race and would be represented by Richard Hannon's The Kalonji Man. The chestnut is related to a pair of winners who were rated in the 90's and is in the right hands for a good start to his career. A second runner for the Tony Coyle and Kaine Wood stable would be Too Many Spirits, who has also been gelded like his stablemate. The son of Rajasinghe is the latest offspring of a mare which the stable know well and have gained success out of in the past. David Loughnane is another trainer who is capable of sending out winning juveniles and would be represented by Zelen. The son of Ubettabelieveit comes from a classy Aga Khan family, but is another to have been gelded ahead of his debut. The first of the fillies would come in the form of Martha Brown for rookie trainer Kathy Turner. The speedily bred newcomer would aim to provide a dream success for the family stable.
