7th October

A deluge of rain before racing brought about a timely reminder of the change in season, but the weather soon improved for the better and it didn't deduct the competitiveness of the day's racing. The feature race at was a three-year-olds only heritage handicap over the Ebor distance of a mile and six furlongs. Usually a clue to a new contender for Cup races next year, the race has had a short and successful history. Back in 2019, the finish was fought out by none other than future high class stayer Hamish and subsequent Group One winner Trueshan. This year's renewal featured a good line-up of promising stayers, most of whom had crossed swords earlier in the year. The race would eventually go to the William Haggas-trained Post Impressionist, who looked so unlucky when badly hampered on his last start, who powered away from his rivals to look a top prospect for next year. A first ride and first win at York for rising star of the saddle Adam Farragher, who recently landed a similar prize at Ascot last month.
A new race for 2022 was introduced and was another edition of the valuable sales races which offer lucrative prize money and is eligible for horses who passed through the sales ring as yearlings. The Goffs UK Sales Race winner Shouldvebeenaring made a return to York following his Ebor Festival win and he faced other well regarded types such as sales race winner Streets Of Gold, emphatic debut winner Defence of Fort and progressive Hougoumont. The valuable prize went home to the still unbeaten Streets Of Gold, who made it two wins at York and picked up another big pay check for his owners by finishing powerfully under Danny Tudhope.
A common theme of race meetings at York are fiercely competitive handicaps and a pair of class two events complimented the feature races. Over a mile, the race saw the return to their unofficial second home to regulars such as What's The Story, Lion Tower, La Trinidad, Cruyff Turn and Northern Express. There was plenty of Northern interest in the race with the majority of runners trained in the area with some Newmarket raiders thrown into the mix. The race would go to the unexposed four-year-old Substantial who loved every drop of rain which fell beforehand to bring conditions into his favour.
The second difficult puzzle to solve was the five furlong handicap, named in honour of Copper Knight; one of the co-winning most horses at York with six wins. He lined up in his own race in a bid to make it seven and he faced regular rivals such as Count d'Orsay, Zargun and Nomadic Empire amongst the twenty-strong line up. The Richard Hughes-trained Kimngrace took the honours and decimated her rivals in the process, relishing the soft ground and winning by three lengths.
Elsewhere on the card, the opening nursery handicap saw Betweenthesticks win for trainer Mick Channon and jockey Rose Dawes, who is one from one at York and her mount was winning on his fourteenth start this year.  The final race of the day went the way of Yaniffer for trainer Hariet Bethell and jockey Oisin McSweeney. Yanifer has been a model of consistency this year and another win was deserved.  There was an informative novice on the card too, featuring many once-raced horses who caught the eye on debut and well-bred individuals making their debut. The event would go to the previous winner in the field Shaquille, who has raced all three starts at York and he made it two wins from three with a comfortable victory despite some pre-race acrobatics in the parade ring.
