8th October

The final race day on the Knavesmire saw much better weather than the previous day and plenty of quality on display. The feature race was the Rockingham Stakes, a six furlong listed race for two-year-olds and has often been the final task of a usually busy schedule for the juveniles. Last year's renewal was won by Canonized, who had the classiest form in the book with placings in group races. This year's edition saw a tight renewal on paper with the plenty of sales race form added to the equation in the shape of Alpha Capture and Felix Natalis. Ebor Festival winner Kyeema returned to York along with the likes of listed race winner Bolt Action and promising debut winner Bay Of Plenty for Irish trainer Johnny Murtagh. The race would go the way of Doncaster runner-up Alpha Capture, who had the best piece of form after a narrow defeat by top juvenile Cold Case and he just held on to win; beating stablemate Kyeema in a William Haggas one-two.
Over the same course and distance, the valuable Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap was a potential final big prize for one of the regular faces in these type of races. Dakota Gold lined up on the Knavesmire once again in his bid to become the outright winning most horse at York, Ebor Festival winner Bergerac returned to the scene of his summer highlight and old friends such as Mr Wagyu, Bielsa, Gulliver, Hyperfocus and Air Raid all knew their way around York. The event would remain in Yorkshire as the Richard Fahey-trained Strike Red under Billy Garritty landed the prize, having regained the winning feeling in recent starts.
The most intriguing race on the card was also the smallest. The ten furlong handicap featured plenty of Newmarket runners and was won last year by Bay Bridge, who went on to win at Group Two level and place at Royal Ascot. The in form Marching Army had won two of his last three starts for Godolphin and was fancied again, Protagonist had improved for a switch to William Haggas' stable and was an unlucky loser in the Cambridgeshire Handicap while there was a bit of history as His Royal Highness The King had a first runner at York courtesy of Saga, who wore the famous Royal silks. The race went to the outsider of the field, Algiers. Despite his odds, the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained five year old had plenty of Group race form to his name but the negative was an absence from the track since March. He caused a minor surprise under jockey Harry Burns.
Elsewhere on the card, there was an eye to the future with a nursery handicap over a mile won in emphatic style by the Ralph Beckett-trained Grey's Monument, who followed up an equally impressive win on similar ground on last start. The mile long maiden race won by newcomer Modesty, a nicely bred type out of Coolmore mare. Maiden races at this time of year are usually the time where stables begin to unleash their better hopes, so the winner is one to follow closely next year. The two mile handicap was a stamina test on the tacky ground, but the Roger Varian trained Praiano took the honours with a wide margin win on his first start over two miles. The Finale Handicap over the Juddmonte distance of ten furlongs rounded out  proceedings and the race was won by the Julie Camacho-trained Titian, a useful tip for any future pub quiz question regarding York race winners.
As the light began to fade over the racecourse and horses returned home, it was time for York to close up shop. From the first winner of the year, Gaassee to the final winner Titian, the season has been memorable.
