22nd July

The popular Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival rolled into York for the first of two consecutive meetings on the Knavesmire. The Sky Bet-sponsored event has been taking place yearly for a while now and features a raceday at one of Yorkshire's eight courses over the course of a week. Starting at Ripon and finishing at Pontefract, it is always well received and competitive. The only evening meeting on York's calendar took place alongside a post-racing concert by legendary band Madness, but the on track action was fronted by the EBF Lyric Stakes for fillies and mares. The listed race over a mile and two furlongs was won in 2019 by subsequent Royal Ascot winner Fanny Logan and is an invaluable race win for a prospective breeding career in the future. The race looked to revolve around the three-year-olds, the unbeaten Judith and progressive Poptronic, but it was the four-year-old Achelois who avenged her narrow defeat in the valuable John Smith's Cup with a smooth win. Always travelling stylishly, it was a matter of when not if she would win once David Probert pressed the button on her.
Elsewhere on the card, there were two wins each for jockeys Kevin Stott and Oisin Orr, adding to both of their win tallies at York this year. Stott landed the class three handicap on the Godolphin owned Ghaly, who had previously missed two seasons prior to a recent comeback, and rode the impressive winner of the final race Alia Choice for trainer Kevin Ryan. Oisin Orr rode a double courtesy of his boss Richard Fahey which came onboard International Girl in the six furlong handicap and then Spirit Dancer, who was fourth in the John Smith's Cup, who landed the ten furlong handicap.
A smart performance by debutant Shaquille in the novice race went into the notebooks of onlookers as he pulled away from a decent field. Always travelling well and looking professional at the finish, it was a first two-year-old debut winner of the year for trainer Julie Camacho and a possible tilt at a higher grade for his next start.
