St Leger Festival 2023

A highlight not only in the calendar of racing in Yorkshire, but also a highlight in the British racing scene as the St Leger Festival descended upon us in its customary September slot. Doncaster's Town Moor venue hosts their biggest four days of action of the entire year, with the main event being the St Leger Stakes; the final Classic of the year and oldest of the five.
Racing's biggest names make the pilgrimage to South Yorkshire to compete in high quality events spread out over four days. With races for juveniles, stayers, sprinters and fillies, there is plenty of action to produce stars of the present and future. The meeting began on Thursday this year, as the raceday held usually on a Wednesday was switched to the final day on Sunday in a bid to boost attendances. The races remained largely the same and racing fans were ready to witness the likes of the May Hill Stakes, Doncaster Cup, Flying Childers, Park Stakes and Portland Handicap, all historic races won by many famous names.

As the action moved onto the third day, the Saturday was always going to be the biggest day of all. The meeting kicked off with a Group Two for juveniles to set the tone for the rest of the day. The crowd will have been warmed up nicely for the main event, the St Leger, so it was down to the equine stars to write their names in racing history. The newly relocated meeting on Sunday was one aimed at families with plenty of activities for all ages. The feature race of the day would be the popular "Leger Legends" race in which a group of retired jockeys of both disciplines don their riding boots and gear for a one off race at Doncaster which also provides support for charities. The lineup of legends really lived up to the race's title and it would be one more chance for racing fans of all ages to see these former champions in full flight once again.
