Friday 12th June

Race One: The Andy Thornton Hospitality Furniture Handicap - Class Four - Seven Furlongs - Runners:
The action on the Knavesmire would get underway with this competitive looking handicap over the intermediate distance of seven furlongs. This contest is limited to apprentice riders so while the equine stars are well known names to punters, they would be partnered by some of the newest stars of the future. Back in 2024, this class four contest would be the first half of a remarkable 24 hour double of wins for Tolstoy, while last year another course regular Feel The Need took his second win on the Knavesmire to date.

Heading the weights in this year's renewal would be Esherann, trained by Declan Carroll. The former Irish-trained four year old landed a good race last season and looked to be an interesting recruit to the Yorkshire stable, but he has struggled to find his best for in three starts this year. James Owen can train winners with all types of horse and the Newmarket handler would be represented by Goldmoyne here. The six year old has been a revelation since the New Year, winning four times on the all-weather and then holding his form well in better company. He would finish a close up fourth at Beverley last time out. The grey Brighton Boy looked to enjoy soft ground when winning at this venue two seasons ago for previous connections and now returns to York with the Tim Easterby stable. The four year old has suddenly clicked in recent starts, winning at Thirsk in a higher grade and then going close over this distance at Chester two weekends ago. Brian Ellison had a good record in this race with Tolstoy in recent seasons and the same connections would hope for further good fortune with Lir Speciale. The seven year old had returned to his best recently with a pair of wins at Doncaster at the end of last season before a third in a big handicap on his seasonal return in March. He ran poorly in another big handicap at Newbury last time, but this is an easier task. Another grey in the field would be Karl Burke's lightly raced Recency Bias. The four year old has done most of his improving on the all-weather, winning impressively at Newcastle in March. Since then, he has run consistently well and bumped into a talented sort at Carlisle last time out. Yet another winner at York in the past would be Master Richard, who ended a losing streak by scoring at Thirsk last September. The experienced seven year old ran well in a pair of all-weather events at the start of the year and has now joined the Noel Wilson stable. Sword has shown that he is a talented sort when at his best, but he remains quirky. The five year old is another to switch yards recently and made a low key debut for the Stuart Williams yard last month where he was tailed off at Lingfield. A second runner for the Newmarket yard of Stuart Williams would be I Still Have Faith, who has mutliple wins to his name, but the latest of those came back in 2023. The gelding joined his current stable at the start of this year and has held his form nicely, finishing fourth at Newmarket with a typical late surge.

Race Two: The Constant Security Keeping York Racegoers Safe Rous Selling Stakes - 2-Y-O Only - Class Three - Six Furlongs

Next up would see the juveniles take to the stage for the first time this afternoon. This contest may be a seller by name and nature, but it is one of the most valuable races of its type in the whole year. With a £25,000 prize pot and £13,000 going to the winner, it is entirely possible that connections could win more money than the cost of their horse. This six furlong dash is often hotly contested, as is the auction for the winner in the parade ring after the race is finished. The past two renewals have remarkably gone to the Ollie Pears stable, who won this race for the same owners with perceived outsiders. In 2024, his maiden Inconspicuous finshed strongest of all to win, while last year, the yard achieved the same feat with Carnation Queen who found a jolt of improvement on her third start.

Race Three: The British EBF Fillies' Handicap - Class Two - Six Furlongs - Runners:

The feature race of day one of this valuable fixture would be this competitive sprint handicap over six furlongs for fillies and mares. With "black type" so important to the bloodstock industry nowadays, owners are keen to land a win in this sort of race to boost their filly or mare's profile at stud. The race has also been won by some very smart sorts in recent times. In 2024, the highly progressive Alfa Kellenic would win this as part of a six race win streak which culminated in the Ayr Silver Cup. In 2022, Michael Dods's filly Gale Force Maya landed this before adding two more listed race victories to her name. Last year, the race saw some trouble in running and the well bred Easy Peeler squeeze through to win for the John and Sean Quinn stable.

Heading the weights in this year's contest would be the lightly raced Rhyme Dust, who lined up for the Ralph Beckett stable. The four year old had a good season last year, finishing in the frame in two listed races during the summer. She has since returned down the order in two more listed races this year and takes a drop in grade this time around. Ed Bethell is a trainer to be respected with sprinters and he would saddle the useful Fluorescence. The four year old won in good style on a few occasions, but those wins came over five furlongs. Her intended comeback went badly as she unseated her rider from the stalls, so will be hoping for better luck this time.

Race Four: The Juddmonte EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes - 2-Y-O Only - Class Two - Five Furlongs - Runners:

The quality of the action would continue as the juveniles would be focussed on once again. This often informative novice event will be no different this year as a number of leading stables and operations would be represented. Last year, the Amo Racing team unearthed a talented filly in the form of Kevin Philippart de Foy's India Love, who went on to win her first three starts before struggling in Group company at the end of the season.

Race Five: The Whixley Handicap - Class Two - One Mile, Two Furlongs - Runners:

Another ultra competitive contest would take its place on the card as the joint-longest event of the afternoon; over ten furlongs. This good looking handicap held the potential to be a trial for the upcoming John Smith's Cup in a month's time as it falls perfectly into the schedule and is a like-for-like contest for the prestigious handicap. This race often goes the way of an unexposed and improving sort, like last year's winner Burrito. The four year old was bred in the purple and extended his good record to four wins for the John and Thady Gosden stable but hasn't been seen in action since then.

Race Six: The Dawson Williamson Architects Handicap - Class Three - Five Furlongs - Runners:

Race Seven: The Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap - Class Four - One Mile, Two Furlongs - Runners:
