John Wainwright Racing Club

It can often be a long drawn out and frustrating process for a new racing club starting out, but the when first winner lands, it makes everything all the more sweeter.

The John Wainwright Racing Club was born in the summer of 2022 with the aim of buying a collection of horses to race for the club with a main priority of reasonable membership costs. Founders Phil Walker and Dave Fitch spent hours scanning through sales books and attending auctions with plenty of potential purchases slipping through their grasp on many occasions. They finally saw a winning bid land on a three year old filly named Elettaria, a daughter of Mehmas who had been trained by Clive Cox.

The filly was lightly raced enough and had a nice pedigree which made her an attractive prospect and she was soon moved up to North Yorkshire with the John Wainwright stable. She would join a team which is currently enjoying a resurgence in form and the small closely knit family run operation is starting to make moves. The name John Wainwright may not be as well known in the racing world and the stable may not possess the quality of fellow Malton yards of Camacho and Fahey. However, John Wainwright can rely on a wealth of experience that follows a similar route to close neighbours John Quinn and Nigel Tinkler. In the past, Wainwright has tasted listed race success through the likes of Loch Jipp in 2008 and Vita Spericolata in the early 2000's. Current stars of the yard in the present day include Biplane and Dandy's Angel.

Back to the racing club, the aim is to grow in stature both on the track and on their roster. Horse sale catalogues will undoubtedly be scoured for more equine talent and the club is growing with the number of members as it begins its second full year. Benefits of joining include owners badge ballots for the full racing experience, regular updates on social media and the all important stable visits, all for a very admirable price. Further details on joining the club can be found on John Wainwright Racing's website.

ELETTARIA (Mehmas x Rayon Rouge)

Elettaria joined the team at Granary House stables towards the end of 2022 and was an attractive proposition for a first racing club horse. Previously trained in Lambourn by Group One winning trainer Clive Cox, the three-year-old has shown glimpses of promises in her four starts with a debut third and a couple of decent runs on the all-weather. She is a daughter of Mehmas who was one of the leading first season sires in 2020, courtesy of the high class Minzaal, Lusail and Supremacy all winning at the highest level. Elettaria is also a half sister to the useful one-time winner Red Ensign, who was trained by the Crisfords in Newmarket. Further back in the family includes the smart Group Three winner Highgarden, winner of the Nayef Stakes for the Gosdens.

After swapping Lambour7n for Yorkshire, Elettaria made her racing club debut at Wolverhampton. On a highly exciting evening for all involved, she ran with credit to finish eighth and only beaten four lengths. Mixed fortunes would soon follow with a midfield finish on her next start before she started the year 2023 on the wrong foot as the saddle slipped and lost all chance of being competitive.

A break soon followed and the focus turned to the turf season. There was plenty of experimenting to find out her ideal conditions and at the unique Beverley, a track which the stable do very well at, things began to look brighter. Outrunning her odds of 100-1, Elettaria kept on well into fourth. It was a sign of things to come as the racing club gained their moment in the sun as Elettaria finished best of all to win at Carlisle for the first time. It provoked great scenes for all involved and a weight taken off the shoulders as the burden was lifted. Just like London buses, a second win for Elettaria soon followed as she won at Newcastle in even more impressive style, stylishly scything through the field from the last to first. It would seem now that the key has been found to unlock further progress in the four year old and plenty more fun can be enjoyed with along the way.
